Return With Honor Exhibit

✈️ “Return with Honor” Exhibit Opens September 19, 2025 at the National Naval Aviation Museum
A Story of Sacrifice, Brotherhood, and Survival Comes to Life
This fall, the National Naval Aviation Museum will unveil a powerful and deeply moving new exhibit: Return with Honor, opening to the public on September 19, 2025.
This immersive experience tells the remarkable story of American prisoners of war (POWs) during the Vietnam War—those who endured years of unimaginable suffering in captivity, yet never gave up hope, dignity, or the will to survive.
“We had a code. It was Return with Honor. It was our dignity, our reputation, our character that brought us through.”
— Commander Everett Alvarez, Vietnam POW
🕊️ A Journey Through Captivity and Courage
At the heart of this exhibit is the infamous Hỏa Lò Prison, known to American POWs as the “Hanoi Hilton.” From the moment of capture, through harrowing interrogations, isolation, and eventual release, visitors will walk in the footsteps of the brave men who lived through one of the most difficult chapters in U.S. military history.
Through powerful storytelling and cutting-edge AI technology, guests will hear directly from Commander Everett Alvarez, the first American POW held in North Vietnam. With interactive Storyfile AI, Alvarez answers questions in his own voice, sharing memories of survival, resilience, and brotherhood that carried him through over eight years of captivity.
💬 Exhibit Chapters Include:
- The Home Front
- The Capture
- Interrogation
- Prison Life
- Coming Home
- Aftermath
📣 Voices That Must Be Heard
Visitors will also hear from other POWs like Mike McGrath, who recalled the terror of hearing keys jangle in the night, and how faith, camaraderie, and secret communication codes helped them endure.
🏡 The Struggles at Home
“A Life Suspended” highlights the painful sacrifices made by families back home—wives, children, and parents left in the dark, waiting years for answers, all while trying to hold onto hope and carry on. These silent heroes organized, advocated, and waited for the moment their loved ones would come home.
